The library welcomes the opportunity to serve children with disabilities. If you or your child require a program to be in accessible format, please notify Youth Services at 262-246-5182 at least 72 hours in advance so arrangements can be made.

Stories and More
Join us for stories, rhymes, songs,and early literacy fun. No registration required.

Fridays 10:00-10:30 am: September 17 - November 19

Family Storytime

Family Storytimes are intended for parents and children of all ages to participate together in a large group setting. Drop in and join us for as many as you’d like. No registration required.

Wednesdays 10:00-10:30 am: September 22 - November 24

Playgroup

Join other families after Family Storytime and Stories & More for an informal playgroup that meets Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:30-11:30 a.m. No registration required.

 

Storytime for 3-5 Year Olds

Parents or caregivers are welcome, but not required, to sit in Storytime sessions. Registration begins Tuesday, September 7th at 9:30 am.

Tuesdays 6:30-7:00 pm: September 21 - November 23

 

5K/1st Grade Book Club

In this fun group we will listen to books, about the stories, and enjoy a related activity. Registration begins Tuesday, September 7th at 9:30 am.

Thursdays 4:30-5:15 pm: Sept. 16, Oct. 14, Nov. 11, Dec. 9

 

After School's Cool Book Club

2nd & 3rd Graders have fun with stories, books,games, crafts, and more. Registration begins Tuesday, September 7th at 9:30 am.

Wednesdays 4:30-5:15 pm: Sept. 22, Oct. 20, Nov. 17, Dec. 15

4th, 5th & 6th Grade Book Discussion

Join other kids to talk about the books we read. Books are provided by the Friends of the Library and will be yours to keep after attending the discussion. Registration begins Tuesday, September 7th at 9:30 am.

Mystery Night

Young detectives take on the case at our annual Mystery Night on Wednesday, November 10 from 6:30-7:30 pm. Children in grades 1-5 will be part of a team, interview a cast of suspects, search for clues, and try to solve the mystery. REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Children must register between October 25 and November 9 to participate.

 

Homeschooler's Brown Bag It!

Bring a lunch for you and your kids and meet at the library for a homeschool get-together. Network with other homeschoolers, share resources, and discuss the nitty-gritty details of homeschooling. Toys and games will be provided. No registration required.

Fridays, Noon-1:00 pm: Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12

Wii Gaming

Join us in the children’s area for Wii open play gaming events. All ages are welcome to play great family Wii games in a
non-tournament atmosphere.

1:00-4:00 pm, Saturday, September 25; Saturday, October 23; Saturday, November 13;Tuesday, December 28.

No registration required. Kids under 8 must be accompanied by an adult who remains in the building during gaming events.

 

Reed Marionettes

The Friends of the Library are celebrating their 30-year anniversary this year and to help them celebrate, they are sponsoring two performances of The Reed Marionettes. Bring the entire family to enjoy this entertaining program. Get your face painted between shows by the library’s teen advisory board. No registration required.

What else do we offer?

Where else can you take a journey on the Titanic, go to camp with Arthur, read someone else's diary, join the Gypsy Circus with Madeline or help Corduroy find his pocket? The Pauline Haass Public Library Children’s Area holds these adventures and many more as you go on a treasure hunt through the shelves of the Library.

Our Treasure Chest is filled with:

 

  • Books for preschoolers thru twelve grade.
  • Board books for babies and toddlers
  • CD-ROMs to check out and selected titles to preview at the library
  • The Internet
  • Videos and DVD's
  • Books on tape and CD
  • Music cassettes and CDs
  • Magazines

Also in this special area:
 
  • Computer catalogs, including Kids Library  to help young readers locate their favorite materials
  • A storytime room which also serves as an afterschool group study area and computer center
  • The Parent/Child Center is for children and their families who need a cozy place to share a book, or play with the library toys
  • Specially designed reading chairs for children to escape into with a favorite book 
  • Puzzles and checkers
  • New books on display
  • Children’s restroom with space to change a baby’s diaper

 

Group Visits
Daycare, preschool, and elementary school classes, as well as scout troops and other groups of children located in Sussex and Lisbon are invited to tour the library. Arrangements can be made with a Youth Service's staff member in person or by phone at 262-246-5182.  Sessions are typically thirty minutes in length. Upon request, staff members will also visit school classrooms.

 

The library staff is committed to providing the very best service to library customers. Let us help you find a favorite picture book for reading aloud, recommend a book that will make a young sports fan eager to read, or locate the information that is needed to finish a school assignment.
